FAQs: commissioned music
Clear communication and shared goals are important in any creative relationship. For this reason, I have found it useful to put together some key information points for composition clients. I am very happy to talk through the details below, if you have any questions. -
By default I will supply you 48khz, 24-bit stereo wav files of final tracks that have been mixed and mastered. If you prefer another format please let me know.
Within film scoring there is typically the need to rewrite/resync sections of music for the final cut of the film. My rates assume that up to 10% of the music’s total duration will need resyncing. Please keep in mind that this is complex work as it requires not only recomposition but again mixing and mastering the music. As such, it is generally the case that recomposition/reworking of music beyond this 10% will be charged additionally.
I am glad to provide stems for mixing and mastering by a third party. The preparation of stems can be time consuming, depending on what is needed. Hence this may introduce additional costs.

Our agreement provides you license to use the music in your main project (i.e. film, podcast) and any derivative outputs (such as trailer, social media, promotional materials).
As the composer I retain the rights as the creator of the music (meaning I am free to release this as a standalone “album”, etc). I will not license use of music created for your project for another project (e.g. an unrelated film by another producer/director/creator).
I will ask to be appropriately credited as the composer: Samuel J. Wilson.

Generally, the final invoice is determined on the basis of (1) the duration of music supplied, (2) the music’s complexity to produce, and (3) the context of the music within the project (e.g. focal opening themes vs subtle background underscoring of dialogue). I am happy to send indicative rates on request.
For larger projects, I can supply a listing of all tracks sent. An invoice will be sent for all tracks that have been requested and supplied to you.
On completion of the project, for films I ask that you send me a downloadable version of the final film for more for my records (with my assurance this will not be shared without your permission).

I do not use AI within my compositions. All music is composed and performed by me and/or performers who will be credited appropriately.
